How long do I need to live in Spain to qualify for citizenship?

You must have lived legally in Spain for 10 years, either with a temporary or permanent residence permit.

Can this 10-year period be reduced?

  • For refugees: the period is reduced to 5 years.
  • For citizens of Latin American countries, the Philippines, Portugal, Equatorial Guinea, Andorra or Sephardic Jews: the period is reduced to 2 years.
  • For children born in Spain or spouses of Spanish citizens: the period is reduced to 1 year of legal residence.

Do years spent in Spain on a student visa count towards citizenship?

No, years spent on a student visa do not count.
